DENTON — Once again, Texas Woman's and Midwestern State engaged in a thrilling match with the Pioneers securing its first conference victory of the season, winning 1-0 on a goal from
Abigail Martinez in the 85th minute.
"Midwestern is a quality team," head coach
Babak Abouzar said. "It's been tough these last few matches, competing against them, because it's almost like we're playing ourselves."
In what was a closely contested match, both teams were defensively strong with
Daniela Marin anchoring the Pioneers, recording the clean sheet.
"I think our defense is solid," Abouzar said. "(Daniela) made a great save to keep the game even. With the effort and the energy, I think that translates to us being able to create opportunities on the attack."
Outshooting the Mustangs 13-4, Martinez,
Riley Sutton,
Hannah Schneider and
Jaycee Fuller each recorded multiple shots.
On Saturday, the Pioneers will host Oklahoma Christian at 3 p.m. to wrap up this week's homestand.
