PIONEERS RALLY TO DEFEAT SOUTHEASTERN IN OT

DURANT, Oklahoma (Nov. 20, 2021) – Three players scored in double figures, Sadie Moyer, Keslyn King and Ma'K'La Woods, in Texas Woman's University electrifying overtime win over Southeastern Oklahoma State University, 55-54, on Saturday afternoon.

Looking to gain their first road win of the season, TWU (3-1) traveled to Southeastern Oklahoma (1-3) ready to battle for a victory. Down the stretch, the Pioneers battled from being down by as much as 10 to claim the one-point win and remain undefeated in overtime periods in 2021.

"I am just so proud of our players—how they adjusted the whole time and how they handled adversity," TWU head coach Beth Jillson said. "I thought our defense played really well down the stretch."

Southeastern lead for most of the game, with TWU cutting the lead to one or two multiple times. After being outscored in both the first and second quarter, the Pioneers went into halftime trailing by eight points.

In the third quarter, TWU chipped at the deficit, while forcing Southeastern into difficult shots to limit their offensive potency. Around the sixth minute mark of the third quarter, the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to just one late in the third.

Then, Southeastern went on a run to end the third quarter, but the Pioneers never stopped fighting. At the sixth minute mark of the fourth, Moyer went to the line and scored two free throws to bring the Pioneers within one, or so everyone thought. After Moyer hit the free throws, the referees reviewed an earlier TWU basket, which was originally ruled a two, and reversed the call to count as a 3-point basket. With this ruling, the Pioneers tied up the game, 47-47.

After the tie, the teams traded baskets, with Southeastern never leading by more than two.

One minute and 30 seconds remained on the clock. In the nail-biting seconds of the fourth quarter, Southeastern lead by two, but the Pioneers had the ball. Scout Huffman battled in the paint and scored a lay-up to tie the game. Southeastern still had 10 seconds on the clock, but they were unable to draw up a winning play, as well-timed fouls by TWU decreased the clock and sent the Pioneers into their second overtime of 2021.

Southeastern struck first in overtime, making two free throws to take a two-point lead, 54-52. After those, both teams struggled to find the basket as overtime ticked away.

However, TWU's fight continued to prevail. With 24 seconds on the clock, the Pioneers passed the ball around the top-of-the-key. Huffman sent the ball into Ashley Ingram on the post. Ingram missed a shot, got her own rebound, finished the put-back and drew the foul. Ingram made the free throw to complete the 3-point play to ice the win, 55-54, for the Pioneers.

Moyer finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. King added 11 points, four rebounds and five assists.

Woods also dropped 10 points this afternoon. She only lacks 12 points to move into 12th on the all-time career points list for TWU.

Bringing energy off the bench and boasting critical plays that do not necessarily show up on the stat sheet, Huffman played well down the stretch, contributing eight points and grabbing nine rebounds.

"Scout was really just a huge spark off the bench for us, grabbing boards and knocking down critical shots," Jillson said.

Finally, Ingram and Woods rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers with five each.

In another strong defensive performance to stifle Southeastern to just eight points in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers grabbed nine steals and forced 16 turnovers. Moyer, King and Agang Tac each recorded two steals.

"We had a lot of different players step up for us in big ways tonight," Jillson said.

During the upcoming holiday weekend, the Pioneers will go on the road to play two games in the Angelo State Thanksgiving Tournament in San Angelo, Texas. They will play Arkansas Tech University on Friday, Nov. 26 at 1 P.M., followed by a game against Harding University on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 1 P.M.
