PIONEERS DOWN ST. EDWARD'S ON SENIOR DAY

DENTON, Texas - Kaylee Smith and Stephanie Garcia each scored goals, and goalkeeper Morgan Sherman made a pair of saves as the Texas Woman's University soccer team (12-4-2, 9-4-0 Lone Star Conference) picked up a 2-1 win over St. Edward's (9-7-2, 7-5-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Pioneer Soccer Park.

"What a great win on senior day," said head coach Babak Abouzar. "Mya (Alcala) served a great ball on a free kick that Smitty headed in. You couldn't draw it up any better than they did. Steph did a great job of pressing their backline and keeper and was able to score a goal off of pure hard work. Those are things a coaching staff loves to see. I was impressed on how our team worked hard and showed grit. It's great momentum for us to have heading into the conference tournament."

Alcala fed Smith in the 22nd minute to give TWU a 1-0 advantage, and the Pioneers took advantage of the pressure situation in the 31st minute to jump ahead 2-0.

That advantage held until the 76th minute when SEU's Sarah Preston booted in a long goal to pull the Hilltoppers to within 2-1, but Sherman was able to stop SEU's last opportunity in the 85th minute to hold the lead and give the Pioneers the victory.

Rayne Islas, Abby Powers, and Keely Chapman both took a pair of shots, with both of Islas' shots being on goal.

SEU held al 11-9 advantage in shots, with TWU holding a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The Pioneers will open Lone Star Conference championship tournament play on Tuesday, Nov. 9, as the third seed, hosting sixth-seeded Angelo State in a 7 p.m. matchup at the Pioneer Soccer Park.
