PIONEERS FALL TO CAMERON IN SEASON FINALE

LAWTON, Okla. - Ma'K'La Woods turned in a 12-point, seven-rebound effort, while fellow seniors Kam Daily and Kendall Lentz turned in 10-point afternoons, but the Texas Woman's University basketball team (5-9, 5-9 Lone Star Conference) was unable to overcome a third-quarter surge by Cameron (10-6, 10-6), dropping a 78-70 decision to the Aggies in TWU's final game of the 2020-21 season.

"I'm so proud of this team and how they handled adversity and faced every challenge head on throughout this season," said head coach Beth Jillson. "We played a tough schedule in a limited timeframe, trying to make up as many scheduled games as possible. Our seniors were instrumental in leading this team fearlessly through an unprecedented and crazy year. This experience will be an integral part of their lives moving forward. Each challenge faced this year we used as an opportunity to grow both as a team and individually. I'm thankful to have coached these young women and for how they have represented our program and university."

The teams traded leads through the first five minutes of the contest, but a Jazmin Luter layup with 4:44 remaining in the opening quarter started a 6-0 run for the Aggies that allowed Cameron to open up a six-point (14-8) advantage. The Aggies held a six-point lead with 1:32 to play in the quater, but Sadie Moyer hit a jumper on the final possession of the quarter to pull TWU to within three.

Lentz buried a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the second quarter to tie the game at 17-17, and Jordan Jenkins put TWU ahead one minute later with a transition bucket. However, the Aggies would answer as Maighan Hedge buried a 3-pointer on the next possession to put Cameron ahead 20-19.

Again, the two teams went back-and-forth over the next two minutes, with both Daily and Macy Wilkerson hitting baskets that gave the Pioneers leads, but Cameron reclaimed the lead at the 7:13 mark and extended it to three (26-23) just 30 seconds later.

Brielle Woods found the net with 4:20 to play in the quarter to put TWU ahead 29-28, and again the teams would trade leads down the stretch, with Wilkerson twice connecting to put the Pioneers ahead before Daily hit a jumper in the paint with 21 seconds to play that sent the Pioneers into halftime with a 37-36 lead.

The Pioneers started the third quarter strong, as Ma'K'La Woods scored the first four points of the quarter to open up a five-point (41-36) lead 90 seconds in, but Cameron reclaimed the lead at the 6:58 mark after Hedge knocked down a pair of free throws and the Aggies used a 7-0 run to grab a six-point (48-42) lead midway through the third.

Momentum was on Cameron's side as the Aggies pushed the lead into double figures and led by as many as 16 (61-45) with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter, but the Pioneers fought back, as a 3-pointer by Brielle Woods opened a stretch where the Pioneers outscored Cameron 11-2, and a 3-pointer by Lentz pulled TWU to within seven (63-56) going into the fourth.

TWU gradually chipped away at the Cameron lead in the fourth quarter, using a Moyer layup to pull to within four (70-66) with 3:39 to play. TWU would pull to within four on two more occasions, using a pair of free-throws by Ma'K'La Woods to narrow the deficit to 74-70 with just 1:15 remaining.

Cameron took a time out with 50 seconds to play, and Daily picked up a huge steal just seven seconds later to give the Pioneers the possession with 43 seconds remaining. However, TWU was unable to convert offensively, and after a Cameron rebound, TWU was forced to foul.

The Aggies made the most of their opportunities at the charity stripe to extend their lead over the final 30 seconds of play.

The Pioneers held a 9-7 advantage on second-chance points and outrebounded Cameron 39-30, while the Pioneers shot 46.3 percent from the floor to Cameron's 45.0 percent.

There were 18 lead changes and six ties in the game.
