PIONEERS DOWN NO. 3 AUGUSTANA IN IRWIN CLASSIC FINALE

TYLER, Texas - Paige Tamayo and Kate Franz both turned in three-hit games, while Tamayo, Jalee McDonald, and Alexys Ginegaw drove in a pair of runs apiece as the Texas Woman's University softball team (1-4) closed play at the UT Tyler Irwin Classic with a 9-6 win over No. 3 Augustana on Sunday.

The scheduled final game against St. Mary's was cancelled due to inclement weather.

TWU used a big first inning to set the tempo, plating five runs on four hits. Taylor Goulet opened scoring with an RBI single, and was followed by another RBI single by Karlee Wickersham. A sacrifice fly by McDonald put the Pioneers lead at 3-0 before Ginegaw doubled home two more to give TWU a 5-0 advantage before Augustana came to bat.

The Vikings struck back as their leadoff hitter, Mary Pardo hit a solo shot to pull Augustana to within 5-1, but TWU answered in the top of the third with an RBI single by McDonald and a sacrifice fly by Solomon to take a 7-1 advantage.

Augustana scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the frame to cut TWU's lead to 7-2, but Tamayo hit a one-out solo shot to answer and push the Pioneers' lead back to 8-2 in the top of the fourth inning.

Again the Vikings would answer in the bottom of the inning, with a bases-loaded walk and an infield RBI single that pulled them to within 8-4. Tamayo went deep once again, with another solo shot in the sixth that pushed TWU's lead to 9-4.

The Vikings' Torry Chute hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to pull to within 9-6, and Augustana threatened again in the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate with one out. However, starter Tatum Quaker, who was lifted in the fourth inning, returned to get the final two outs and the Pioneers claimed their first win of the season.

Wickersham added a pair of hits in the winning effort, as the Pioneers' 4-9 hitters went a combined 11-for-19 during the game. Quaker picked up the win after going 4.1 innings and surrendering four runs, three earned, on six hits while fanning seven and walking two. Kelsie Briggs tossed 2.2 innings of solid relief, allowing two runs on four hits, walking and fanning two.

The Pioneers open up a four-game homestand this coming weekend, hosting Western New Mexico in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 5 and UT Permian Basin in a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
