CANYON, Texas -
Ma'K'La Woods turned in a 12-point performance on a solid 6-of-11 shooting night, putting her within three points of passing Debbie Adams (1979-81) for 23rd all-time in scoring at Texas Woman's University, but the Pioneers (3-7, 3-7 Lone Star Conference) were unable to overcome the hot shooting of No. 9 West Texas A&M (13-1, 12-1), falling 79-44 to the Lady Buffs on Monday at the First United Bank Center.
TWU kept things close over the bulk of the opening quarter, pulling to within two at the 4:22 mark but WTAMU was able to gradually build a nine-point (20-11) advantage after one quarter and extend that in the second and third quarters with a combination of stifling defense and hot shooting.
TWU's offensive performance improved as the game came to a close, as the Pioneers racked up 17 points and shot 57.1 percent from the floor, connecting on eight of 11 free throws - 11 of the 13 free-throws that the Pioneers would attempt all game.
Woods,
Kam Daily, and
Scout Huffman all grabbed five boards while
Jordan Jenkins and
Kendall Lentz dished out three assists apiece.
The Pioneers and Lady Buffs will conclude their two-game set with a 5 p.m. game on Tuesday.
