DENTON, Texas (Oct. 14, 2022) - The Pioneers were swept by UT Tyler (13-7, 6-3) Friday night in Tyler, Texas.
Texas Woman's (12-9, 3-6) volleyball started off strong early in the first set, challenging the Patriots point-for-point. A solo block in the middle from
Monica Wood, tied the set 11-11 for the Pioneers.
The Patriots doled out eight straight points shortly after, before the Pioneers managed to score again. Set one ended 25-16 with a kill from the Patriots.
In set two, the Pioneers gave away three points to start, giving the upper hand to the Patriots. Several momentum changing kills from
Trixie Oche and
Tori Woods kept the Pioneer energy afloat. Nevertheless, the Patriots took set two 25-16.
A kill from
Kiya Yeoman got the Pioneers amped for the third set early on, but the Patriots went on an early five-point run, bringing the set to 5-2. The Pioneers fought hard to try and close the gap, and as the set progressed, the Pioneers made it a three-point game 23-20.
Ultimately, the Patriots closed set three 25-21 to end the match in a sweep over the Pioneers.
Woods led the Pioneers in kills, recording a total of eight for the night, followed by Oche with seven kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Oche totaled nine hitting attempts for the night.
Wood chipped in offensively with five kills, as well as
Luna Van Baars, who registered four kills.
Lizzy Reed created opportunities offensively for the Pioneers, cashing in 18 assists.
At the net, Wood checked in for two blocks to lead the Pioneers.
As a team, the Pioneers were held to a .125 hitting percentage.
TWU won the serving battles, recording seven aces over the Patriots five. The Patriots dominated the net with ten blocks, compared to the Pioneers' four blocks.
"Tonight, Trixie [Oche] and Monica [Wood] led the way for us," Head Volleyball Coach
Jeff Huebner said. I love seeing Trixie's continued growth as an attacker, and the way she leads through her hard work every day. We are looking forward to our opportunity tomorrow to battle one of the top teams in the conference."
TWU will be back in action on Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. Only 40 minutes from TWU, the Pioneers will face Dallas Baptist in Lone Star Conference action.
