PIONEERS SWEEP DALLAS CHRISTIAN IN 2022 HOME OPENER

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 12, 2022) – In their home opener at Dianne Baker Field, the Texas Woman's University softball team swept Dallas Christian with a combined run total of 25.

TWU (3-4) defeated the Dallas Christian (0-4) Crusaders by a score of 7-1 in the first game and 18-0 in the second game.

"What a great day to be at home in front of our fans," TWU head coach Amber Barker said. "After last weekend the team was hungry, determined, and ready to make a statement. It was great to see everyone contribute in their various roles and come up big with two wins at home."

The Pioneers came out of the gate ready to play. In the bottom of the first inning, Paige Tamayo stepped up as the fourth batter in the Pioneers line-up. With two runners already on base, Tamayo double down the left field line, allowing Rylee Lara and Nya Brown time to cross home plate.

Dallas Christian got their lone run of the day on the board in the top of the second inning, before the Pioneers poured on three more runs in the bottom of the second.

Lily Wilson stole second base to put herself in prime scoring position and was able to score on a groundout to second base by Lara. Brown crossed home on another double by Tamayo. Then, Tamayo was able to reap the rewards, scoring on a Missy Wise single after a passed ball by the Crusaders.

TWU scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with Wise and Tamayo recording runs to win the first game of the day 7-1.

In the first game, Tamayo lead the Pioneers with three hits. Wise and Briana Yale each added two. The Pioneers also limited their errors in the win, only making one error in six innings of play.

Julianne Malis (1-3) struck out one batter and recorded the win for the Pioneers.

Then, the floodgates opened for the Pioneers in the second game of the day.

Tamayo again started the scoring for TWU – this time with an inside the park home run to right field, recording two RBIs as Lily Wilson also scored.

The Pioneers scored six runs in the first inning and six runs in the second inning to take a quick 12-0 lead. Then, they closed the game with four runs in the third and two in the fourth inning to run rule the Crusaders 18-0.

Tamayo and Gracelyn Taylor both finished with three hits in the game. Tamayo also added three RBIs to lead the Pioneers. Brooke Cornelison, Brown and Wise each record two RBIs. Finally, Yale finished with the most runs (four), and Tamayo and Cornelison both had three.

Kelsie Briggs (1-0) notched her first win of the season as the starting pitcher, striking out three batters.

The Pioneers will go on the road next Wednesday to Ada, Oklahoma to play East Central University in double header at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
