TAMAYO HITS THIRD HOME RUN OF THE SEASON, BUT PIONEERS DROP TWO TO OC

EDMOND, Okla. (March 27, 2022) – Paige Tamayo hit her third home run of the season, 21st of her career, against No. 23 Oklahoma Christian University on Sunday, but the Pioneers lost two games to the Eagles.

TWU (9-18, 4-12 Lone Star Conference) scored one run in each game against OC (24-8, 12-4), but the Pioneers were unable to defeat the Eagles.

The Eagles ended a nine game homestand today at Tom Heath Field against the Pioneers, going 9-0 at home. On Sunday, March 27, TWU held OC to their second and third lowest run total during this homestand. The lowest scoring game for the Eagles was on March 20 against St. Mary's University, when the Rattlers only gave up four runs.

In their four-game road trip, the Pioneers scored in three straight games, winning one against Cameron on Friday, March 25.

In the bottom of the first inning of the first game at noon, the Pioneers gave up two runs. Then, they responded on defense holding the Eagles scoreless for the next three innings. OC caught some energy in the bottom of the fifth inning and scored two more runs to take a 4-0 lead over the Pioneers.

Tamayo put the Pioneers on the board with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to answer the Eagles. Nevertheless, the Eagles continued to distance themselves, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the first game 6-1.

Tamayo's homer was the Pioneers lone hit of the game on Eagles pitcher Kali Crandall (11-6).

Kelsie Briggs (4-7) started in the circle for TWU. She struck out one batter and gave up two runs, before being relieved by Jalee McDonald, who faced 22 batters.

After a 30-minute intermission, the teams began game two. OC continued their trend of scoring in the first inning, recording three runs in the bottom of the first.

TWU responded quickly in top of the second inning with a run. To open the inning, Missy Wise was hit by a pitch. Then, Briana Yale hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Wise to second. With one out on the board, Alexys Ginegaw hit a single through the middle to score Wise.

Ginegaw's hit was the only hit for TWU against Eagles pitcher Grace Anderson (4-1).

OC scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Pioneers held OC scoreless for the remainder of the game, but the Eagles held onto the win, 5-1.

Jules Malis (4-9) pitched all six innings for the Pioneers and recorded two strikeouts.

The Pioneers return home to Dianne Baker Field on Friday, April 1 to play a doubleheader against No. 10 Lubbock Christian University at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
