ODESSA, Texas (March 6, 2022) – The Texas Woman's University scored seven runs in two games and combined for 15 hits but lost two games against University of Texas – Permian Basin on Sunday, March 6.
In game one, TWU (7-8, 2-2 Lone Star Conference) tied the game in the seventh inning but lost to UTPB (16-9, 3-1) by one run in the bottom of the eighth inning, 6-5. In game two, the Pioneers scored two runs, but they fell to the Falcons, 10-2.
TWU started off somewhat sluggish; then, they came alive late in the first game. UTPB opened the first game with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Then, the Pioneers scored two runs in top of the fourth to cut the deficit to one. With two Pioneers on base,
Jules Malis hit a single and recorded two RBI's, as
Cecily Rodriguez and
Briana Yale scored.
The Falcons responded in the bottom of the fourth innings with two runs. Then, TWU jumped back on the board in the top of the fifth inning.
Nya Brown singled to left field, stole second and advanced to third, before a single from
Jalee McDonald allowed Brown to score.
Still trailing by two, the Pioneers came up clutch in the seventh inning.
Lily Wilson scored off a sacrifice fly by
Rylee Lara, and Brown crossed home plate off a single from
Da'Jia Davis.
Then, the Pioneers defense played solid in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Falcons scored the winning run.
TWU stole five bases in the first game and committed four errors.
Jules Malis started as pitcher for the Pioneers and recorded five strikeouts.
Kelsie Briggs (3-#) received the loss and she allowed two hits.
In five innings of play in game two, the Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the second inning.
Gracelyn Taylor singled to score
Missy Wise, and Brown singled to score Taylor.
The Pioneers gave up four runs each in the bottom of the third and fourth inning to drop the second game 10-2.
Wise led the Pioneers in game two with two hits.
Briggs pitched three innings for the Pioneers – she allowed nine hits and struck out three batters. McDonald pitched one inning for the Pioneers and struck out three batters.
TWU will return home to Dianne Baker Field for a LSC doubleheader on March 11 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. against St. Edward's University.
