DENTON, Texas (September 28, 2022) – Texas Woman's (11-6,2-3) took three sets from Eastern New Mexico (9-8,0-5) in a tightly contested five set match on Wednesday night.
After falling in their last three conference matches, the Pioneers found success on the court tonight. The Pioneers improved their conference record to 2-3, while the Greyhounds dropped their fifth conference match of the season.
Closing the match in five sets, the Pioneers hastily took control of the first set. Although they fell behind early in the first match 6-3, the Pioneers looked to close the three-point gap. A battle from behind would allow the Pioneers to claim set one 25-21.
The Greyhounds responded in set two, after a five-point lead early on. Claiming the second set 25-12, the Greyhounds held the TWU offense to a negative hitting efficiency of -.273.
A hard push offensively from the Pioneers led them to claim set three 27-25; however, the Greyhounds refused to rollover and split the match in set four 25-14.
With the exchange of several points in set five, the Pioneers led the fifth set early with a five-point run, solidifying their victory against the Greyhounds 15-12.
"What a great way to get a road win in five," Head Volleyball Coach
Jeff Huebner said. "Team toughness and bringing the KMA energy to the road was excellent. Myracle [Stockman] had her best match as a Pioneer with a critical kill early on in set five which gave our team momentum before Kiana's serving run."
Added pressure from the Pioneer service line throughout the match provided the Greyhounds with difficulty in executing their offense. Both
Cara Pool and
Erin Jones registered two service aces for the Pioneers, followed by
Kaia Saylor,
Tori Woods, and
Kiana Reed, who each claimed one service ace in tonight's match.
Although the Greyhounds held the Pioneers to .047 hitting efficiency for the match,
Cara Pool rose to the top, hitting .417 to lead the match. Saylor was aggressive in attacking the Greyhound defense, leading the match with 47 attacks.
Kiana Reed made several amazing saves throughout the course of the match, dishing out a total of 24 assists to lead TWU. On the defensive front for the Pioneers,
Yanely Pabon registered 20 digs for the night, while
Trixie Oche and Pool protected the net. Oche cashed in a total of five blocks, and Pool led the Pioneers with six blocks.
The Pioneers are set to take on Lubbock Christian in Lubbock, TX at the RIP Griffin Center Oct. 5. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
