TWU FALLS TO THE COMETS

DENTON, Texas (Nov. 9, 2024) – The Texas Woman's volleyball team fell on Friday night in KMA in a non-conference match against UT Dallas.

TWU (18-6, 11-2) opened the match with a first set victory before falling in three straight to UTD (9-9) to record just their third loss in Kitty Magee Arena and first loss since Oct. 2

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Malia Viernes led the Pioneers with 12 kills and added 17 digs. It marked her ninth double-double of the season.
  • Erin Jones also added double-digit kills, finishing the match with 10 kills. She also added three block assists to her stat line.
  • Grace Reynolds dished out the most assists with 25 and finished with eight digs.
  • Kiana Reed finished with 20 assists and 13 digs to record her fifth double-double of the season.
  • Luna França led the team in digs with 20 on the night.
 IMPACT MOMENTS
  • The Pioneers hit .176 on the match and held UTD to hitting .133. TWU allowed the Comets to record seven aces. The Pioneers finished with six blocks. Additionally, they topped the kills, 51, assists, 46 and digs category, 80.
  • In the first set, the Pioneers went on a 7-1 run  to take a 12-3 lead and never looked back. An attack error by UTD would set up set point. Then, a kill from Myracle Stockman would end set one in the Pioneers' favor, 25-12.
  • In set two, TWU struggled to string together points. Late in the set, they found their first run, scoring four unanswered points to cut the deficit to one, 20-19.
  • After UTD pushed ahead to a 23-19 lead, a kill by Viernes ignited a 3-0 run for TWU to bring the Pioneers back within one, 23-22.
  • A kill by Stockman would hold off a set win for the Comets, 24-23; however, a quick kill ended the set in UTD's favor, 25-23.
  • In a back-and-forth set three, the Pioneers once again struggled to find their rhythm. TWU led 18-14 before allowing the Comets to go on a 5-0 run to take a one-point lead, 19-18.
  • A kill by Jessica Freehill and Kady Hansen pushed TWU back ahead by one, 20-19. Nevertheless, back-and-forth final points favored the Comets, as they closed the set, 25-23.
  • Set four had a similar story, with no team leading by more than one until late in the set. UTD scored four straight to take a 19-15 lead.
  • Then, a kill by Woods brought TWU within one late, 21-20; nevertheless, the Comets closed set four and the match with four straight points to win set four, 25-20.
NEXT UP

The Pioneers will play today, Nov. 9, in KMA to close out their regular season home schedule against Midwestern State at 2 p.m.
