PIONEERS MEET DUSTDEVILS IN LAREDO

LAREDO, Texas (Feb. 15, 2024) – The Texas Woman's basketball team begins their final two-game road trip of the regular season tonight at Texas A&M International.

No. 9 TWU (22-3, 16-1) will meet No. 25 TAMIU (21-4, 13-4) for the second time this season on Thursday night.

Last week, the Pioneers defeated two teams at home. On Thursday, Feb. 8, they beat St. Edward's 69-59. Then, on Saturday, Feb. 10, they defeated St. Mary's, 85-53. TWU has won their last 12 games in a row – all by 10 or more points.

TAMIU faced Oklahoma Christian and UAFS at home last week, defeating UAFS 63-56 and OC 78-69.

This will mark the second meeting between the two teams this season, as they Pioneers look to record their 17th win in Lone Star Conference action.

ROAD TRIP MEETING WITH TAMIU
  • LAST TIME: TWU and TAMIU have already met once this season on Saturday, Jan. 20 in Denton, Texas. At the time, TAMIU was ranked No. 19. The Pioneers won the game, 73-59. They held the Dustdevils to just 59 points on 38.2% from the field and 28.6% from the three. TWU also forced TAMIU to turn the ball over 20 times and commit 28 personal fouls. The Pioneers also dominated the play in the paint, scoring 42 points. Ashley Ingram led the way for TWU with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Leila Patel and Averee Kleinhans both added 13 points, and Jada Celsur finished with 12.
  • HISTORY IN LAREDO: The Pioneers have only won in Laredo one time out of three – a win which came last season by six points on Jan. 14, 2023, 66-60. Starting with that win, TWU has won the last three meetings with the Dustdevils. The Pioneers own the overall record seven wins and just three losses.
  • TOP STATS: The Dustdevils currently rank first in offense in the LSC, averaging 79.7 points per game. TWU ranks narrowly second, averaging 73 points per game. The big difference is the Pioneers rank fourth in defense, holding their opponents to just 59.9 points per game, while TAMIU tanks 12th, as they allow their opponent to score an average of 66.9 points per game. The Pioneers also rank first in field goal percentage in the LSC with a 45.7% average, and Ingram ranks first in individual field goal percentage, averaging 62.8% from the field per game, which also ranks fourth in NCAA Division II.
