JOPLIN, Mo. (Sept. 8, 2024) – The Texas Woman's soccer team secured their first win of the 2024 season on Sunday against Missouri Southern State (0-1-1), following a second half rally that led to two Pioneer goals, defeating the Lions 2-0. The team's offensive push and aggressive attack proved successful in today's match as they tallied 17 shots, with eight shots on goal and 14 corner kick opportunities.

TWU's record improved to 1-1 for the season as they bounced back from a season opener loss with a significant road win.

IMPACT PLAYERS

KEY MOMENTS

  • In the opening 20 minutes of the game, the Pioneers initiated a strong offensive attack, taking six shots, three of which were on target.
  • The back line and Farris protected the Pioneers' goal very well as Farris kept the game tied at zero in the first half after back to back saves (21', 22').
  • In the 31st minute, TWU made another attempt on the Lions' goalkeeper. Halee Avery managed to get past a few defenders and took a shot at the top of the box, but it was saved by the Lions.
  • Within six minutes into the second half, Alfaro capitalized on a TWU corner kick attempt with a shot right at the net to put the Pioneers up 1-0.
  • After missing six chances to extend the lead, the Pioneers' Halee Avery finally scored another goal in the 76th minute, redeeming herself after hitting the crossbar in the 67th minute. Her goal secured a 2-0 win over MSSU, and it came from a beautifully placed corner kick by Beltran, marking Halee Avery's first goal of the season.

FROM HEAD COACH BABAK ABOUZAR

"I love how our team responded today," Abouzar said. "We bounced back and showed a lot of grit, especially in the second half, finishing off two corner kicks. We are creating some really good opportunities. We have to continue working on the simple things in front of the goal, but overall, it was a great team win, and we had a few individuals step up for us today."
