THE PIONEERS SPLIT CONFERENCE OPENER AGAINST LOBOS

ALPINE, Texas (Feb. 14, 2025) – The Texas Woman's University softball team kicked off their conference schedule on Friday against Sul Ross State. TWU (5-1, 1-1) split its doubleheader with SRSU (4-7, 1-1) in Alpine, Texas, winning their first conference game but suffering their first loss of the season.

In game one, both teams struggled offensively early, with errors contributing to the trend, especially for the Lobos. A late throwing error by SRSU gave TWU the lead in the fifth inning, which turned out to be the winning run. An RBI single in the final inning secured a 2-0 victory for the Pioneers.

In the second game, both teams found their offense early, with TWU taking a 1-0 lead. Sul Ross quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the first. The teams were tied 2-2 after three innings, but the Lobos took their first lead in the fourth. They added another run to extend their lead and held off a seventh-inning comeback attempt by TWU to win 4-3.

Game 1 (TWU won 2-0):

  • Brynlie Dunkin made several crucial defensive plays at third base, and catcher Trinity Perry helped shut down scoring opportunities for the Lobos.

  • An RBI single by Hernandez in the seventh inning extended TWU's lead to 2-0.

  • Sul Ross managed a hit in the final inning, but Gonzalez, who pitched the entire game, held the Lobos scoreless to secure the win.

Game 2 (SRSU won 4-3):

  • Lizzie Smith started a potential comeback with an RBI double that scored Hernandez, but the Pioneers couldn't overcome the 4-2 deficit.
