March 15, 2010 from senior Alexa Brennan
Hello Pioneer fans!
This is senior Alexa Brennan checking in this week as we are finishing up our last away trip of the season. It has been an eventful week for the team and we have had a lot of fun.
We were given a mission to focus on the strong minds and strong training this week. Coach wrote strengths and weaknesses on the board. He asked us to get rid of the weaknesses and be strong. We were challenged to work on being mentally strong and bring only positive aspects to the team. We were in the gym preparing for California, a trip we have been very excited to make.
We left early on Thursday morning for Sacramento. We had a little delay and arrived a little later than expected, but everyone still maintained a positive attitude. We went to eat at Applebee’s and it was delicious. Upon arriving in the city of Davis we walked around and explored the city - such a cute little town. Later Coach took us out for frozen yogurt!
On Friday morning we went over to the UC Davis campus and explored the facilities. All of us immediately wanted to go work out at the really nice student fitness center. Michelle entertained us with playing with some wrestling dummies. The campus was beautiful, but we were disappointed it was raining. Upon returning to the hotel we started to prepare for our meet at Sacramento State University.
We started the meet on bars. We posted some solid bar routines. It was exciting to watch the girls stick their dismounts. It really got us excited. Brittany Johnson ended up winning bars with a 9.825. Next was vault and we had some great vaults. We went seven for seven on vault. The momentum was in full force when we traveled to floor. We unfortunately had to count a fall, but the team still remained in good spirits and we were still having tons of fun. We finished the night on beam, where we had to count two falls. It was a damper on the night because we ended up second to Sac State after leading them the whole meet. We decided to leave it at the meet and focus on the strong side, the left side of the board.
Saturday was a lot of fun. We got a day off between meets and went down to Old Sacramento to walk around and watch their St. Patrick’s Day parade. Some of the girls took old fashioned pictures or went shopping. We got to enjoy time with the family and friends that came to support us. For dinner we got dressed up cute and went to this nice little restaurant. It was delicious. Coach even let us have dessert!
On Sunday our meet was at UC Davis with California Berkley. We started the meet on bars again. The routines were not perfect, but we fought for every tenth. It was awesome to see. Next was beam and we had some great routines, but we again had to count a fall. Despite all the fight and falls we still had strong minds and a strong will. We went to floor and rocked our routines. We had so much fun watching the girls compete. Our last event was vault and the girls went into the event with a lot of confidence. Marcella Fallon posted a career high 9.825! Best vault we have seen her do. We ended up second to UC Davis; we were very pleased with the results.
After the meet we were treated to some pizza before driving to San Francisco. We got to the city and immediately drove to take pictures by the Golden Gate Bridge. We got to play in the ocean for a little and it was freezing! We are now sitting in the airport waiting to take our red eye flight home to Texas. It was such a fun trip and we all had a blast. Who knew we could have so much fun?
Tune in next week to hear about our spring break training!
Come out to support the Pioneers on their final regular season home meet! Time is winding down on the road to nationals. Thank you for all your support.
