AS A JUNIOR (2023)
Viernes appeared in 28 matches for the Pioneers in her junior campaign. She finished with 177 kills on 420 total attacks, 19 assists, 40 digs, and 28 total blocks in 92 total sets played. Viernes recorded a career high 13 kills on Oct. 25 against Midwestern St. She helped lead TWU to a historic 2023 season where they had their best start to LSC play since 2015, returned to the LSC Championships for the first time since the 2019 season, and returned to the NCAA South Central Regional Rankings.

Viernes was awarded the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year Award and the Lone Star Conference Athletic Performance Athlete of the Year for the first time in Texas Woman’s history.

PRIOR TO TWU
Most recently, Malia Viernes played volleyball at Panola College, where she graduated with an Associates of Science degree. While playing at Panola, she was named to the All-Conference Team and recieved Region XIV Honorable Mention honors. She appeared in 89 sets across 28 matches for Panola, finishing the season with 225 kills 58 digs and 37 total blocks. Prior to playing at Panola, Viernes played her freshman season at Prairie View A&M, where she recorded the second most kills on the team and was named Freshman of the Year. In her freshman season with the Panthers, she recorded 183 kills in 79 sets for a season total of 199.0 points on the season. She attended Steele High School and played club volleyball for Tri-County Volleyball Association. In high school, she was named First Team All-District and received Academic All-District honors.
