Texas Woman's University Athletics

Phil Evans was named the head coach of the Texas Woman's volleyball program in July 2026, bringing a proven track record of success, player development and recruiting to Denton.

Evans joined the Pioneers after spending four seasons at Howard University, where he served as the Recruiting Coordinator and First Assistant. Working primarily with the Bison's offensive attack, Evans helped guide Howard to two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Regular Season Championships and three consecutive seasons as the most efficient offense in the conference.

During his time at Howard, Evans helped the Bison make their first appearance in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) in 2023. In 2025, he assisted with match planning and strategy as Howard earned victories over NCAA Tournament teams American University and High Point University.

Evans also developed a strong record of individual player development at Howard. He helped coach a three-time MEAC Player of the Year and All-America Honorable Mention selection. He also directed the setter training program, helping develop three MEAC Setter of the Year award winners. Two of those setters finished among the program's top five in single-season assists. In total, Evans helped coach 17 All-MEAC selections during his four seasons with the Bison.

In addition to his on-court responsibilities, Evans oversaw film and scouting, assisted with team travel and budget management and served as the Director of the Howard Volleyball Manager Program. He also served as the Director and Lead Coach of Howard Volleyball Camps.

Evans played a key role in growing the visibility of Howard Volleyball through marketing and social media. He helped create the program's inaugural season ticket initiative and developed theme nights to increase home attendance. His efforts contributed to Howard hosting its first match with more than 1,000 fans in five years and recording its highest overall season attendance during that span. He also helped grow the program's social media presence, with Howard Volleyball reaching 16,000 Instagram followers during his tenure.

Prior to Howard, Evans spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Xavier University of Louisiana. He helped guide the Gold Nuggets to back-to-back Red River Athletic Conference Championships and coached seven NAIA All-Conference First Team selections. Evans also oversaw film and scouting during his time at XULA.

Evans began his collegiate coaching career while pursuing his undergraduate degree at Mississippi State University. He served one season as a volunteer assistant with the volleyball program and spent four seasons as an assistant video coordinator with the men's basketball program.

Outside of collegiate volleyball, Evans has gained additional coaching experience at the club and national levels. He served as the Nola Volleyball Club 16-1's Girls Head Coach and worked with Louisiana State University Volleyball Camps in 2021. In 2023, Evans served as a clinic coach with the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program.

Evans has also served on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Assistant Coaches Committee as the MEAC Chair and has presented at the annual AVCA Convention.

Evans has twice been named to the Advancement of Blacks in Sports (ABIS) Coaches Watchlist. In 2020, he received the AVCA TEAM Award, which recognizes young minority coaches who have demonstrated a commitment and passion for volleyball. Evans was also recognized as the Volleydictorian as the top member of the 2020 TEAM Award class.

Evans took over a Texas Woman's volleyball program that advanced to the Lone Star Conference Tournament in three consecutive seasons prior to his arrival and earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 2024.
