Soccer stuns #19 Angelo State in front of record crowd

DENTON, Texas (Oct. 17) – TWU sophomore Natalia Diaz recorded a goal and an assist to help the Pioneers pull off a 3-0 upset against #19 Angelo State in front of a school record crowd of 526 fans on Friday night at the TWU Soccer Field.

With the win, TWU improved to 8-5-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in the Lone Star Conference.  The Pioneers became the first team to score three goals against Angelo State this season.

The Rambelles started the game on fire as they got off the first five shots.  TWU regrouped and answered with three straight shots before Diaz was fouled just inside the box by ASU's goalie.  The Colombian product took the penalty kick and scored her 10th goal of the season to put the Pioneers on top in the 29th minute.  Diaz's PK goal tied the TWU school record for most goals in a season held by Brittany Martin.

TWU made it 2-0 in the second half on senior Emily Davila's third goal of the season in the 79th minute.  Davila stole the ball from the Rambelles' defense just outside the box and lobbed it over the goalie.  The Pioneers sealed the game in the 85th minute on freshman Megan Coppedge's goal off a corner kick.  Diaz took the corner kick and picked up the assist while Coppedge scored her second goal of the year.

"For the first time in a while we put together two solid halves," said TWU head coach Babak Abouzar.  "Natalia came off the bench and was a spark for us.  She scored the PK and jump started our offense.  We struggled early but settled down and played a great game."

Junior goalkeeper Ariana Morrison played all 90 minutes in net for TWU and made three saves for her third shutout of the season.

TWU outshot Angelo State, 17-11, including 10-3 shots on goal, but the Rambelles had the advantage in corner kicks 5-4.

The Pioneers will return to action when they host Midwestern State on Sunday, Oct. 19.  The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
