Another record crowd sees Pioneers win against Midwestern State

DENTON, Texas (Oct. 19) – For the second-straight game a record crowd packed the TWU Soccer Field and the large contingent of fans watched the Pioneers defeat Midwestern State, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.  With the win, TWU improved to 9-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

Friday night against #19 Angelo State, 526 fans came to watch the Pioneers stun the Rambelles 3-0, setting a then school record soccer attendance mark.  A crowd of 553 came to watch TWU move ahead of the Mustangs in the LSC standings with the win today.  The Pioneers are currently tied for third with ASU in the standings while MSU dropped to fifth.

The Pioneers scored early in the first half and held for the narrow win.  Senior forward Candice Davies took a pass from senior Erin Bolinger and found the upper left corner of the net in the 11th minute.  It was Davies' third goal of the season.

Both teams had some chances to score but neither capitalized the rest of the game.  TWU outshot the Mustangs, 15-8, but MSU had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.  Both teams had two corner kicks.

TWU junior goalkeeper Ariana Morrison made five saves in net and recorded her second straight shutout and fourth of the season.  Morrison has also contributed to three combined shutout efforts for the Pioneers' this season.

"Defensively we played a great game," said TWU head coach Babak Abouzar.  "Our four backs - Madison Purdy, Samantha Moore, Bobbie Gutierrez and Kayla Gorney, and Ariana in the net, have been playing great this season and they again did a good job on defense.  Midwestern State is a very good team and their coach has them in a system that is very hard to break.  In the first half we were able to match them and in the second half they made some changes to put pressure on us."

Bolinger fired a game-high four shots while Davies had three.  Sophomore Natalia Diaz came off the bench and had two shots for TWU.

The Pioneers will return to action when they host their final home game of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 24.  TWU will face Texas A&M-Commerce at 7:00 p.m. on Senior Night.
