TWU soccer falls 1-0 to Texas A&M-Commerce on Senior Night

DENTON, Texas (Oct. 24) – The TWU soccer team celebrated Senior Night on Friday, but suffered a 1-0 loss to visiting Texas A&M-Commerce in front of another record crowd of 654 fans. It was the third game in a row that the Pioneers set a new school record soccer attendance.

The six outgoing members of the Pioneers' 2014 team – Erin Bolinger, Candice Davies, Kailey Tue, Allison Rupp and Lindsey Sisco - were honored with a pregame Senior Night ceremony.

After a scoreless first half the Lions scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute.  Jade Bell scored her sixth goal of the season on a header following a scramble in front of the net.

The Pioneers stepped up the pressure on the Lions in the final 20 minutes as they got off four shots towards the net.  All four shots were saved or blocked by A&M-C's defense.  TWU sophomore Natalia Diaz came close to tying the score in the 88th minute but the Lions' goalie Courtnie Northern made a diving save at the left post to preserve the win for the visitors.

TWU junior goalie Ariana Morrison played all 90 minutes in net and made nine saves.

"They are a good team and we didn't respond well to their pressure in the first half," said TWU head coach Babak Abouzar.  "We played better in the second half.  We created some scoring opportunities at the end but their keeper made several unbelievable saves.  In our final two games, we have to continue creating those scoring opportunities for full 90 minutes and not when we are down a goal"

The Pioneers will play their final two games of the 2014 regular season on the road starting at Eastern New Mexico on Friday, Oct. 31 at 3:00 p.m. (CST).
