TWU soccer suffers 2-1 road loss at Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, N.M. (Oct. 31) – The TWU soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss at Eastern New Mexico on Friday evening.  The defeat drops the Pioneers' record to 9-7-1 on the season and 3-5-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

The home team got on the scoreboard first in the 16th minute.  The Zias' Victoria Perez scored her sixth goal of the season from the top of the box.  The Pioneers tied the game five minutes later on junior Madison Purdy's second goal of the season.  Purdy took a pass from senior Erin Bolinger and found the back of the net from 19 yards out in the 21st minute.

The Pioneers outshot Eastern New Mexico 5-3 in the final 25 minutes of the first half but went into the break tied at 1.

The Zias regained the lead 15 minutes into the second half.  ENMU's Alyssa Prince, who scored the game-winner in overtime in the first meeting against TWU, scored her sixth goal of the season to put the Zias on top.

The Pioneers again outshot ENMU 3-1 in the final 10 minutes of the second half but could not find the net to tie the game.

"We didn't play with the same intensity as we have the entire season," said TWU head coach Babak Abouzar.  "It's disappointing to see our team not show up with a berth in the LSC Championship on the line.  We need to put this behind us and get ready to play against West Texas A&M on Sunday.  We need to win and get some help from Angelo State for us to make the postseason tournament."

Eastern New Mexico outshot the Pioneers 17-10 for the game including, 9-3, in shots on goal.  TWU junior goalkeeper Ariana Morrison played all 90 minutes in net and made seven saves.

The Pioneers will travel to Canyon, TX, to close out their 2014 regular season on Sunday, Nov. 2.  TWU will face West Texas A&M at 1:00 p.m. at The Pitch. The Pioneers need either a win or a tie against the Lady Buffs to earn a berth in next week's 2014 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship.
