DENTON, Texas (Oct. 18) – Three TWU players recorded double-digit kills to help the Pioneers sweep visiting Texas A&M-Commerce, 25-19, 25-21 and 25-19, on Saturday afternoon in Kitty Magee Arena. TWU won its fourth straight and improved to 14-7 on the season and 8-3 in the Lone Star Conference.
Freshman
Elizabeth Pennington led the Pioneers with 13 kills while sophomore
Mallory Kuechle added 11 and senior
Jaqueline Santos chipped in 10. Santos led all players in the game with a .421 hitting percentage while Pennington hit .375 and recorded a game-high three service aces. Kuechle had seven digs on defense and had two service aces. TWU junior setter
Joey Redwine assisted on 33 kills and added seven digs on defense.
In the first set, both teams traded points early before TWU used a 9-3 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Lions rallied to cut the deficit to two but the Pioneers responded with 7-0 run before winning the set by six points.
In the second se,t both teams again split the first 16 points before TWU scored the next seven points to take a 15-8 lead. A&M-Commerce put together a late rally but the Pioneers held on for a four-point win to take a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, TWU fell behind 10-5 but used a 9-1 run to go on top 14-11. The Pioneers pushed the led to seven, 22-15, with a 5-0 run before winning the set by six points. TWU posted a .448 hitting percentage in the set with just two hitting errors.
"Overall we played okay today, but we didn't play to our potential," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "Our block was off today and we too many hitting errors early in the game. But any conference win is a big win and it doesn't matter how you win."
The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to Lawton, OK, to face Cameron on Friday, Oct. 24. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Aggie Gym.
