TWU Soccer Wins in Double Overtime at Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, N.M. (Oct. 11) – Junior forward Nancy Chavez scored in the 107th minute to help the Pioneers to a 2-1 double overtime win at Eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon.  TWU is now 6-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

Senior forward Natalia Diaz scored the Pioneers' first goal and then assisted on Chavez's game-winner.

Both teams went scoreless in the first half as they traded shots.  TWU had a slight 4-3 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes but managed just one on goal.  The Pioneers' defense, however, held ENMU to zero shots on goal.

TWU came close to take the lead early in the second half at 57:25 mark but junior Gaby Larson's shot hit the crossbar.  The Greyhounds took advantage of their first shot in the 73rd minute and took a 1-0 lead.  ENMU's Morgan Fairbanks scored her second goal of the season on an assist by Danielle Caro.

The Pioneers tied the score in the 81st minute on Diaz's fourth goal of the season.  She found the rebound off the Greyhounds' defender and put it in the right corner of the net from 18 yards out for the unassisted goal.

Both teams struggled to create scoring opportunities the rest of the second half and the first overtime period.  In the second overtime, Chavez took a cross from Diaz and got it just over the goal line to give TWU a 2-1 win.

"This is a tough place to play with a big field and windy conditions but we picked up a huge win," said TWU head coach Babak Abouzar.  "We had a mental lapses on one defensive play and they took advantage.  Natalia scored an amazing goal to even the score and we had a great soccer play on Nancy's goal.  We are happy with the split on this road trip."

The Pioneers finished the game with a slight 7-6 advantage in shots while ENMU had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.  TWU also outshot the Greyhounds, 4-2, in shots on goal.

The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to Commerce, TX, to face Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday, Oct. 15.  The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
