SAN ANGELO, Texas (Oct. 17) – TWU juniors
Sara Oxford and
Mallory Kuechle both recorded double-doubles but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers fell in straight sets at Angelo State, 24-26, 21-25, and 19-25. TWU is now 15-5 on the season and 6-3 in the Lone Star Conference.
Oxford led the Pioneers with 11 kills and 12 digs while Kuechle added 10 kills and 11 digs. Freshman
Makayla Mayfield recorded a team-best 16 digs while senior
Hillary Shaffer added nine kills and five blocks and senior
Joey Redwine finished with 34 assists and four blocks.
In the opening set the Pioneers built an early 7-4 lead and led by as many as five points, 17-12. Angelo State used a 7-2 run to even the score at 19-19 and then took a 21-20 lead on a kill and a Pioneers' hitting error. Both teams traded points until the Rambelles recorded back-to-back kills to capture the set 26-24.
TWU again built an early 10-5 lead in the second set and led by as many as seven points but ASU used a late run to capture the set. With the Pioneers leading, 20-15, the Rambelles went on a 10-1 run for a four-point win.
In the third set it was Angelo State that built an early 6-4 lead but TWU went on a 6-4 run to even the score at 10-10. The Rambelles answered with a 10-4 run to take a 20-14 lead and then split the next 10 points to capture the set by six points.
"We played well early in the first two sets and jumped out to comfortable leads but couldn't close them out," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "In the third set we fell behind and couldn't put together a big rally. This was a tough road trip against two very good opponents. We still have lot of games left this season. We need to regroup and start another winning streak like we did last time we lost to Tarleton State."
The Pioneers will return home to host three games next week beginning with a non-conference game against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Oct. 20. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
