DENTON, Texas (Nov. 3) – The TWU volleyball team dropped a five-set match to visiting Angelo State Tuesday night in Kitty Magee Arena. The Pioneers led 2-1 before ASU rallied to win the match 20-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-14, and 15-11.
The loss drops TWU to 20-6 on the season and 9-4 in the Lone Star Conference.
Junior outside hitter
Mallory Kuechle recorded a double-double with a team best 13 kills, 15 digs and a .306 hitting percentage. Junior
Sara Oxford also added 15 digs and led the game with eight blocks.
In the first set both teams went back and forth until the Pioneers turned a 15-13 deficit into a 20-16 lead with a 7-1 run. TWU captured a five-point win after outscoring the Rambelles, 4-2, in the final six points.
In the second the Pioneers fell behind, 8-3, early in the set but rallied to cut the deficit to two points, 9-7. ASU pushed the lead back to six points with 5-1 run. Trailing 22-15, TWU went on a 4-0 run but the Rambelles scored three straight points to close out the set.
In the third set it was all Pioneers from the get go as they posted a .375 hitting percentage as a team. TWU jumped out to an early 6-3 lead but Angelo State chipped away to make it 11-10. The Pioneers responded with six straight points to push the lead to seven points before winning the set by 10.
It the fourth it was the Rambelles that jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. ASU pushed the lead to eight points before the Pioneers rallied. TWU used a 5-1 run to make it 12-8 but the Rambelles went on a 10-2 run to extend their lead and captured the set by 11 points.
ASU carried the momentum into the fifth and took an early 5-2 lead. The Rambelles led by as many as seven points, 13-8, before TWU went on a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to three points. However, ASU captured the set and the game on a TWU service error.
"We were inconsistent throughout the game," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "Played really well in two sets and then struggled in the other three. We put together some rallies at the end but it was too late because we already dig ourselves a hole. We blocked well with 12 team blocks but offensively we weren't consistent."
The Pioneers will return to action when they host Cameron on Friday, Nov. 6. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
