CANYON, Texas (Feb. 14) – The TWU softball earned two slugfest victories on the second day at the WT Woodward Invitational in Canyon, Texas. The Pioneers defeated Chadron State, 22-15, in the first game before picking up a five-inning 16-7 win against Colorado Mesa.
In the Pioneers first game of the day, TWU and Chadron State combined for 37 hits and 37 runs. The Pioneers tied a school record with six home runs including two long balls by senior
Kendra Sancet and one each by junior
Laura Mabary, sophomore
Katy Stephens, freshman
Tylia Sylestine and senior
Sarah Wittenburg. Sancet reached base in all five of her at bats with two hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch.
The Pioneers took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run shot by Sancet in the top of the first. After falling behind 3-2 at the end of first inning, TWU sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in the second inning. Stephens drove in five runs in the inning on a three-run home run and two-run double. The Pioneers added three more runs in the third on a solo shot by Sancet and a two-run shot by Wittenburg.
Chadron State scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth before Mabary hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to make 17-5. The Pioneers were three outs away from capturing a run-rule win in the bottom of the fifth but the Eagles scored eight runs to make 17-13. Both teams traded a run in the sixth before Sylestine hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to seal the win for TWU.
In their second game of the day against Colorado Mesa, the Pioneers picked up a run-rule victory after scoring 16 runs on 17 hits. TWU again took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first but the Mavericks scored two in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers responded in the second by scoring six runs after sending 10 batters to the plate. The big hits of the inning for TWU came on a two-run home run by sophomore
Alyssa Galaz and a three-run double by junior
Celina Ortiz.
TWU batted around in the fourth to score three more to make it 10-2 before adding six in the fifth. The Pioneers sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth highlighted by Mabary's two-run triple. Colorado Mesa did not go quietly in the bottom of the fifth. The Mavericks also sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs.
Junior
Tealey Farquhar went 4-for-4 with a walk in five at bats while Sancet was 3-for-4 with a walk. Junior
Bailee Wortham pitched all five innings for the win.
"It's nice to see our offense score 38 runs in the two games," said TWU head coach
Genny Stidham. "We had a chance to run-rule both games but we will take the wins anyway we can. Kendra was on fire, reaching base nine times in 10 at bats. We have two big games tomorrow and we need to carry this momentum into those games."
The Pioneers will play two more games on the third and final day of the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 15. TWU will face Metro State at 10:30 a.m. before meeting Colorado School of Mines at 12:45 p.m.
