TWU softball falters against #10 St. Mary’s

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 13) – The TWU softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to visiting St. Mary's, 11-5 and 10-1 (6), on Wednesday night at Pioneer Field.  TWU is now 12-15-1 on the season.

In game one, the Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with three unearned runs.  Freshman Alexis Elizondo drove in the first run on a fielder's choice and junior Tealey Farquhar brought home two with a single up the middle.

The Rattlers went on top 4-3 in the third with a grand slam and added six more in the top of the sixth to taka 10-3 lead.  TWU made it 10-5 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by senior Sarah Wittenburg.  STMU added another run in the seventh for a six-run win.

In the nightcap, St. Mary's took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added five more in the second to make it 7-0.  The Rattlers also scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning.  The Pioneers scored their only run in the fourth on a RBI fielder's choice by sophomore Katy Stephens.

"We stranded lot of runners and didn't make any adjustments to their pitching," said TWU head coach Genny Stidham.  "The home runs that St. Mary's hit wouldn't have been a problem if we did not walk batters before those hits.   It's a different ball game if they (the home runs) were solo shots or two-run home runs instead of grand slams.  We need to step up and pitch better and hit better.  We need to find a way to win."

The Pioneers will return to Lone Star Conference play when they travel to Commerce, TX, to face Texas A&M-Commerce in a four-game Lone Star Conference series scheduled for Friday-Saturday, Mar. 27-28.  TWU & A&M-C will open the series with a doubleheader on Friday at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
