DENTON, Texas (Mar. 8)
– The TWU softball team opened its 2015 Lone Star Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep against Tarleton State, 11-7 (10) and 10-2 (5), on Sunday night at Pioneer Field.
For the second straight game, TWU sophomore
Nicole Nordie showed off her power with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to win game one for the Pioneers. Nordie also started in the circle in the second game of the doubleheader and tossed four shutout innings for her first win of the season.
In game one, both teams traded single runs in the first and two runs in the second for a 3-3 tie after two innings. TWU freshman
Tylia Sylestine drove in the first Pioneer run while junior
Laura Mabary brought home the two TWU runs in the second. TWU took a 4-3 lead in the third on a RBI double by junior
Tealey Farquhar.
The TexAnns went ahead in the fifth with two runs and made 7-4 with two more runs in the sixth. The Pioneers cut their deficit to one on a two-run home run by senior
Kendra Sancet in the bottom of the sixth before tying the game in the seventh on a RBI double by Nordie.
After both teams went scoreless in the next two innings, TWU loaded the bases with two outs in the 10th and Nordie launched her fifth home run of the season over the left center field fence. TWU sophomore
Tori Bice was the winning pitcher in game one after she came on in the sixth inning and tossed four shutout innings to record her sixth win of the season.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers' offense erupted for four runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth for the run-rule victory. Sylestine, sophomore
Alyssa Galaza and sophomore
Katy Stephens picked up RBI's in the first innings. Sancet hit her second home run of the day, her team-leading seventh long ball of the season, in the second with two runners on base.
TWU freshman
Alexis Elizondo drove in the only run in the third on a sacrifice fly. TWU added the two runs in the fourth on a RBI single by Sancet and a Tarleton State error. The TexAnns scored their two runs on a two-run home run in the top of the fifth.
Nordie finished the day 6-for-8 with four runs and five RBI while Sancet went 5-for-6 with three runs and six RBI. Farquhar also batted 5-for-8 with three runs.
"Tori and Nordie pitched great today," said TWU head coach
Genny Stidham. "Our pitching staff is finding their groove after struggling the first two weeks of the season. Offensively, we are hitting the ball well. Nordie is in a zone right now at the plate and hit another big home run. Kendra also had a great day with two big home runs, especially the two-run shot in the first game to cut the deficit to one run."
The Pioneers and the TexAnns will return to action on Monday, Mar. 9, to wrap-up the four-game series with a matinee doubleheader at Pioneer Field. Game one will start at 2:00 p.m. with game two to follow immediately. Free pizza will be given out to all fans while supplies last as part of the Pioneers' annual Pizza at Pioneer Field promotion.
