KINGSVILLE, Texas (Mar. 14) –TWU sophomore pitcher
Tori Bice tossed two complete games to help the Pioneers to a doubleheader sweep on Friday evening at Texas A&M-Kingsville. TWU won the first game 7-4 before capturing an 8-0 run-rule win in six innings in game two.
With the two wins, the Pioneers improved to 19-18-1 overall and 11-6-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
In game one, the Javelinas took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After a scoreless second, TWU scored three runs in the top of the third to go on top. Junior
Laura Mabary drove in the first run to tie the game and senior
Kendra Sancet followed with a double to drive in two runs.
Texas A&M-Kingsville got one back in the bottom of the fourth but the Pioneers added three more in the sixth to make it 6-2. With runners on first and second with one out, junior
Tealey Farquhar tripled to left center to bring home two runs and later scored the sixth run on an error.
The Javelinas cut the deficit to two runs, 6-4, in the bottom of the sixth. TWU added an unearned run in the top of the seventh to make it 7-4 on a RBI single by sophomore
Katy Stephens. Bice recorded a ground out and two fly outs in the bottom of the seventh to pick up her 11th win of the season.
In game two, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a RBI single by sophomore
Alyssa Galaz. TWU added two more runs in the top of the third to make it 3-0. Freshman
Tylia Sylestine and Stephens each had a RBI single in the inning.
The Pioneers scored an unearned run in the fifth before added four in the sixth to make it 8-0. The big hit in the sixth inning came off the bat of Sylestine. She hit her sixth home run of the season to left field with a runner on base. Freshman
Alexis Elizondo also picked up a RBI single in the inning.
Bice tossed just 85 pitches for her first complete-game shutout of the season. She allowed four hits and walked three batters to record her 12th win of the year.
"Tori was a work horse today with two complete-game wins," said TWU head coach
Genny Stidham. "She pitched well in first game and pitched even better in the second game. Offensively we found a line-up that is scoring runs. We got some big hits from Kendra, Katy, Tealey and Taylia with runners on base."
The Pioneers will return to action when they play another doubleheader against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, Apr. 11, to wrap-up the four-game series. The games are scheduled for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
