TWU softball falls in the LSC Championship game

CANYON, Texas (May 2) – The TWU softball team suffered a 9-6 defeat to the host West Texas A&M in the 2015 LSC Championship game on Saturday afternoon at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, TX.

The Pioneers were led by junior Tealey Farquhar and freshman Alexis Elizondo with two hits and an RBI apiece and freshman Tylia Sylestine who drove in two runs.  Junior Laura Mabary and senior Kendra Sancet had one RBI each.

West Texas A&M took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after a bases loaded walk.  After a scoreless second inning, Elizondo led off the third inning with her first career home run to center field to tie the game at 1-1.  With runners on second and third, Mabary singled through the left side to put the Pioneers on top, 2-1.  Sancet followed with a squeeze to give TWU a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Buffs answered in the bottom of the third with two two-run home runs to regain the lead 5-3.  WTAMU used another base loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth inning and a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to add to their lead.

The Pioneers scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 8-4.  Farquhar singled to left with two outs to bring home senior Sarah Wittenburg from third.  After the Lady Buffs added a run in the sixth, TWU scored its final two runs in the top of the seventh on a monster home run by Sylestine to center field.

"We struggled with our pitching and couldn't get in a rhythm," said TWU head coach Genny Stidham.  "We walked lot of batters and you can't do that against a team like West Texas A&M.  I am proud of the girls for not giving up until the last out."

Elizondo, Farquhar, Wittenburg and sophomore Nicole Nordie were selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Pioneers will now wait for 2015 NCAA South Central Regional selections, which will be announced on Monday morning, May 4.  The top-eight teams in the region will advance to the NCAA tournament.  TWU was ranked sixth in this week's regional rankings released on Wednesday, April 30.

TWU Athletics will host a Regional Selection Watch Party on Monday morning from 8:30-9:30 a.m. The party will take place in the lobby of the Athletics offices in Pioneer Hall, Suite 220. Complimentary coffee, juice, water, Rudy's breakfast tacos, and cinnabons will be provided.
