Morrison’s Career Day Not Enough in Soccer’s 1-0 Loss

GOLDEN, Colo. (Sept. 13) – TWU senior goalkeeper Ariana Morrison tied her career-high with 10 saves but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers fell to the host Colorado School of Mines, 1-0, Sunday afternoon.

For the second straight game the Pioneers allowed a late second half goal for the loss.  TWU is now 2-2-1 on the season.

In the first half the Pioneers could not get anything going on offense as they were outshot, 10-0.  TWU's defense, however, held the Orediggers to just three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes and kept the game scoreless at the half.

In the second half both teams went back and forth with scoring opportunities.  The Pioneers almost found the net in the 66th minute when junior Nancy Chavez had an opportunity to score but a diving stop by the Orediggers' goalie kept TWU off the scoreboard.

Colorado School of Mines capitalized on a misplayed ball by the Pioneers' defense to take a 1-0 lead in the 79th minute.  Jaclyn Knott scored her first goal of the season for the Orediggers.

"Even though we lost this game I am happy with the performance by our team," said TWU head coach Babak Abouzar.  "Colorado School of Mines was a final-four team last year and we played them tough the entire game other than the one miscue on defense.  At halftime Megan (Matteck) told the girls that it's going to come down to one opportunity.  Ours didn't go our way in the 66th minute and theirs did."

The Orediggers finished the game with a 21-6 advantage in shots but TWU had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

"Most of their shots were from a long range," Abouzar said.  "We were okay with them taking those shots because we had confidence in Ariana in stopping those shots."

The Pioneers will return to Texas and then head to Arkansas to play Ouachita Baptist on Thursday, Sept. 17.  The game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Wesley and Debbie Kluck Field in Arkadelphia, AR.
