ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (Sept. 17) – TWU senior forward
Natalia Diaz scored a goal and assisted on two more to help the Pioneers to a 3-1 road win at Ouachita Baptist Thursday afternoon.
TWU snapped a two-game losing streak and improved its record to 3-2-1 on the season.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the 18th minute on Diaz's third goal of the season. She took a throw-in from junior
Emily Russell and found the back of the net to make it 1-0. Freshman
Ashley Bishop made it 2-0 with her first collegiate goal in the 24th minute. Senior
Ryleigh Spivey, who received a sideline pass from Diaz, sent a cross to Bishop for the goal.
Ouachita Baptist cut the deficit in half right before the half time. The Tigers' Marley Zochert found the net in the 41st minute to make it 2-1.
TWU responded right after the break to push the lead back to two goal. Junior
Gaby Larson scored her second goal of the season in the 48th to make it 3-1. She deflected a header from sophomore
Chelsea Martin off a corner kick from Diaz.
"We started off attacking well and got off some shots early in the game," said TWU head coach
Babak Abouzar. "After we scored our first two goals we got complacent and they capitalized off of it. We regrouped at the halftime and scored our third goal early in the second half. That took the air out of their momentum."
The Pioneers finished the game with an 18-12 advantage in shots and 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper
Ariana Morrison made four saves in the net for the win. Diaz led the team with four shots while Bishop finished with three shots.
TWU will now head 30 minutes south to Dallas on Saturday, Sept. 19 to face Dallas Baptist. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Patriot Soccer Field.
