DENTON, Texas (Sept. 25) – The Pioneers started their 2015 Lone Star Conference schedule fast as they scored a goal in the first minute in a 2-1 win over visiting Midwestern State Friday night at TWU Soccer Field.
Senior
Madison Purdy scored the fastest goal in school history by finding the back of the net 46 seconds into the game. She scored from the far post to the left corner of the net off of a corner kick from senior
Natalia Diaz.
Previous school record was held by Emily Meinen when she scored 48 seconds into the game against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Oct. 22, 2004.
TWU's 1-0 lead disappeared in the 25th minute on an own goal off a corner kick by Midwestern State. The Pioneers regrouped and answered 10 minutes later to regain the lead. Freshman
Brittany Jones collected a rebound off of MSU defender in front of the net and kicked it over the goalkeeper at 35:05 mark for her first collegiate goal.
The second half of the game was scoreless as neither team was able to create any scoring opportunities.
"As a coach I was excited to score that early and get on the end of a corner kick on the first opportunity," said TWU head coach
Babak Abouzar. "But at the same time did we score too early, because they picked it up and got the momentum. We were unfortunate on the goal we gave up. Credit our girls that they didn't let it bother them and came back to take the lead. I don't think it is one of our better games but at the end of the day the result matters over the performances."
Midwestern State finished the game with slight advantage in shots, 11-9, and corner kicks, 7-5.
Senior
Ryleigh Spivey led the Pioneers with three shots including two on goal. Senior
Ariana Morrison played all 90 minutes and made four saves for the win.
The Pioneers will return to action when they host #7 Angelo State on Sunday, Sept. 27. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at TWU Soccer Field.
