Late Fort Lewis Goal Forces 1-1 Tie for TWU Soccer

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Sept. 5) – The TWU soccer team led Fort Lewis by a goal late in regulation, but the Skyhawks scored in the final minute to force a 1-1 tie on Saturday at MSU Soccer Field on the campus of Midwestern State.

After a scoreless first half, the Pioneers got on the scoreboard early in the second half on a penalty kick.  Senior Natalia Diaz was fouled inside the box at 46:49 mark and was awarded a PK.  Diaz took the penalty kick and scored her first goal of the season.

TWU continued to put pressure on the Skyhawks, outshooting them 7-3 in the second half.  Diaz came close to make the score 2-0 in the 77th minute but the ball bounced off the post.

Fort Lewis capitalized on its final chance and knotted the score at 1-1 when Renne Terrell found the net at 89:06 mark.  Both teams had very few chances to score in the two extra periods as they settled for a tie.

The Pioneers outshot FLC, 14-10, but only had a slight advantage in shots on goal, 7-6.  The Skyhawks had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-3.

Diaz finished the game with four shots while senior Ariana Morris played all 110 minutes in the net and made five saves.

The Pioneers will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 when the host Rogers State.  The game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at TWU Soccer Field.
