DENTON, Texas (Sept. 8) – Three different players scored a goal and three others picked up an assist in TWU Soccer's 3-0 win over visiting Rogers State Tuesday afternoon. Junior
Alisa Velasquez led the team with a goal and an assist.
After a slow start, the Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute on Velasquez's first goal of the season. She took a pass from sophomore
Rachel Rupp and found the net from five-yards out.
The Pioneers again were unable to find the net in the early second half until senior
Natalia Diaz's breakaway goal in the 78th minute. She got behind the defense at midfield, dribbled to the close left wing before cutting back inside for her second goal of the season. Junior
Melina Prado picked up the assist after finding Diaz at midfield.
TWU made it 3-0 in the 88th minute on junior
Rachel Peters' first goal of the year. Velasquez took a pass from senior
Ryleigh Spivey from the Pioneers' backfield and found Peters on a breakaway just pass the midfield. Peters also dribbled to the close left wing before cutting back inside for the goal.
"It was the result we want but not necessarily the performance," said TWU head coach
Babak Abouzar. "I will take the win any day of the week. I would rather play average and win rather than play really good and lose. Rogers State came out to play and we did not respond particularly well early on."
The Pioneers outshot Rogers State, 23-5, including 13-2 in shots on goal. TWU also had a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Peters and sophomore
Chelsea Martin each had five shots each while Diaz finished with three. Senior
Ariana Morrison played all 90 minutes in the net and made two saves for her second shutout of the season.
The Pioneers will now head to Colorado to play at Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday, Sept. 11. The game is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. (CST).
