Late goals topple Pioneers at No. 24 Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Sept. 30, 2016) – Two goals by 24th-ranked Midwestern State in the final 10 minutes doomed Texas Woman's University in a 3-1 loss Friday night on MSU Soccer Field.

On the evening, MSU (6-1-2, 3-0-0 LSC) took 12 shots compared to 11 from the Pioneers (5-4, 1-3 LSC) and tallied eight shots on goal to six from TWU. The goalkeepers from each team collected five saves apiece, however the largest discrepancy in stats was corner kicks as the Mustangs recorded eight to just one from the Pioneers.

The Mustangs struck first in the contest as Nicole Coetzer had her shot hit off of the crossbar into the ground and back into the goal in the 12th minute. Samantha Jimenez tipped away two MSU attempts minutes later and then made a diving save to keep the Pioneers within one.

TWU attempted their lone corner of the contest at the 38-minute mark but the ensuing shot went high over the crossbar. Nancy Chavez tried two shots in the final minutes before the end of the period but did not find success.

Blaine Cathey connected on her second goal of the season in the 68th minute on a scramble in front of the box to knot the game at 1-1.

A header shot by Chelsea Martin missed wide left with 11 minutes to play, but MSU had better luck as Hanna Mattinson broke the tie on a shot as she dribbled into the middle of the box and fired into the top corner of the goal to retake the lead.

Chavez attempted to tie with five minutes remaining but had her shot saved by the goalie, and a minute later the Mustangs connected again on a free kick from the right side to seal the win.

The Pioneers take a break from Lone Star Conference play to host Lubbock Christian Tuesday at 3 p.m. on TWU Soccer Field.
