DENTON, Texas (Oct. 4, 2016) – Two overtimes were not enough to decide a winner between Texas Woman's University and Lubbock Christian as the teams ended in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of play Tuesday afternoon at TWU Soccer Field.
LCU (6-2-2, 4-2-1 HC) recorded 20 shots compared to a dozen by TWU (5-4-1, 1-3-0 LSC), and the Lady Chaps totaled nine shots on goal to five from the Pioneers. Lone Star Conference saves leader,
Samantha Jimenez, totaled eight on the day as LCU compiled four. TWU's record in double overtime contests now stands at 2-4-25.
All of the scoring action was completed within the first 10 minutes of the contest. The Lady Chaps struck first as Jamie Boone scored on a penalty kick two-and-a-half minutes in after the Pioneers were charged with a foul for pushing in the back.
Alisa Velasquez tried to tie things up on a shot minutes later but the try went wide right. A corner kick in the 10
th minute for TWU proved rewarding as
Nancy Chavez found
Chelsea Martin in the box for a Pioneer goal.
Tivona Tinsley directed two free kicks at the goal 10 minutes into the second half as each bounced into the box but neither found their way into the goal. LCU had a decent look in the 89
th minute before the teams headed into overtime.
The Lady Chap defense was forced to make a significant substitution at goal when the starting keeper went down with one minute remaining in the extra period. No shots were taken by either team during the final 59 seconds to send the game into double overtime.
LCU sent two shots towards the goal but was stopped by Jimenez on the first and the second sailed wide. The Pioneers attempted the final shot of the game with less than a minute remaining, but the ball sailed high to conclude the game in a tie.
The Pioneers hit the road for conference action at Texas-Permian Basin Friday at 7 p.m. and Angelo State Sunday at 2 p.m.
