DENTON, Texas (Feb. 28)
– The TWU softball team made its home debut Sunday afternoon and swept the doubleheader against St. Edward's, 6-1 and 9-3. The wins improved Pioneers' record to 11-7 on the season.
In game one junior
Tori Bice tossed a complete game and struck out six batters for her seventh win of the season. She allowed a home run to the third batter of the game and then shut down the Hilltoppers with six scoreless innings.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, TWU took a 2-1 lead on Bice's two-run home run to the left center. The Pioneers then added three runs in the fifth to make 5-1. Junior
Logan Polasek drove in the first run before senior
Laura Mabary doubled to left center to bring home two runs. TWU scored the sixth run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double by freshman
Lindy Kennedy.
In game two junior
Hailey Dixon went the distance in the circle for her second win of the year. She also allowed a run in the first inning but tossed four scoreless innings before allowing two more runs.
The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-out two-run home run by junior
Nicole Nordie. TWU then sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth and scored six runs to take an 8-1 lead. Big hit of the inning came on a pinch-hit double by freshman
Melanie Stephens with bases full of runners to drive in three. Mabary also drove in two and sophomore
Amanda Gray brought home a run in the inning.
SEU scored two run in the top of the sixth but the Pioneers got one back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI sacrifice fly by Nordie.
"After not playing for two weeks we didn't know what to expect but the girls came up with big plays when they need to," said TWU head coach
Genny Stidham. "Our pitching did a superb job in both games. It was exciting to see Tori get out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the first game. There were several plays that were game changers."
Nordie, Mabary and Stephens all finished with three RBI while senior
Tealey Farquhar scored three runs on the day.
The Pioneers will return to action when they open their conference schedule at Tarleton State on Friday, Mar. 4. The doubleheader against the TexAnns is scheduled for 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
