Softball Splits Conference Opener at #25 Tarleton State

STEPHENSVILLE, Texas (Mar. 4) – The TWU softball team opened its Lone Star Conference scheduled with a split at #25 Tarleton State on Friday.  The Pioneers captured a 7-1 win in the first game before falling 12-3 in five innings in the second.

In game one, junior Tori Bice struck out a career-high 10 batters and junior Nicole Nordie drove in five of the seven runs.  The Pioneers gave Bice a three-run lead before she took the circle in the first inning on Nordie's three-run home run to left field.

TWU added a run in the second on a RBI double by senior Tealey Farquhar and a run in the third on a RBI single by sophomore Amanda Gray to take a 5-0 lead.  Tarleton State scored an unearned run in the bottom of third to make it 5-1.

The Pioneers added to their lead in the top of the fourth on a two-RBI single by Nordie to make it 7-1.  The TexAnns put runners on base in each of the next four innings but they were all stranded as Bice recorded six of her 10 strikeouts in those innings.

In the second game the Pioneers again took an early lead in the top of the first inning.  Farquhar scored from third on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.  Tarleton State responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning by sending 11 batters to the plate.

TWU scored its second run in the second when freshman Melanie Stephens scored an unearned run.  Stephens also drove in the Pioneers' third run in the third on a single up the middle.

The TexAnns again sent 11 batter to the plate in the third and added five more runs for a 12-3 lead.

"We did everything well in the first game and then struggled in the second," said TWU head coach Genny Stidham.  "Tori pitched a great game.  When she put runners on base, she got out of it with strikeouts.  Nordie and Tealey were tough outs to get at the plate.  In the second game we put 10 runners on base either by walks or hit by pitches and they took advantage of it.  It's tough to win when you are giving up that many free passes."

The Pioneers will return to action when they wrap-up the four-game series with Tarleton State on Saturday, Mar. 5.  The doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
