LAWTON, Okla. (Apr. 1) – The No. 20 TWU softball team split the doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Cameron. After dropping the first game 12-2 in five innings, the Pioneers bounced back with a 7-6 win in the second.
With the split TWU is now 24-12 on the season and 12-5 in the Lone Star Conference.
In game one the Pioneers scored first with two runs in the top of the second. Senior
Laura Mabary singled to start the inning and later scored the first run of the game. Freshman
Lindy Kennedy also single and scored an unearned run to make it 2-0.
Cameron scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1. The Aggies then sent 12 batters to plate in the third and scored six runs to take a 7-1 lead. All six CU's runs were scored without a hit as the Aggies drew seven walks in the inning including five with bases loaded. Cameron also scored a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth for the run-rule win.
In game two the Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. TWU scored all three runs without a hit on a lead-off walk and three Cameron errors. The Aggies scored a pair in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2.
After a scoreless second, the Pioneers scored three more in the third to make it 6-2. TWU scored the first run on an error with two outs before junior
Katy Stephens drove in two runs on a double to center field.
After another scoreless inning, the Aggies made it a one-run game with three runs in the fifth including two unearned runs. The Pioneers pushed the lead to two runs on a two-out RBI double by junior
Morgan Harrison in the sixth inning.
Cameron scored a run in the seventh to make it 7-6 and then loaded the bases with one out. Junior
Tori Bice who started in the circle got a fly out and a pop up to end the game and pick up her 14th win of the season.
"We were lucky to get the split after walking lot of batters and committing five errors," said TWU head coach
Genny Stidham. "Cameron is a good team and they took advantage of all the base runners we put on. Offensively we got couple of big hits from Katy and Morgan in the second game. We need to regroup and play better on offense, play better on defense and pitch better tomorrow."
The Pioneers will return to action when they wrap-up the four-game series with Cameron on Saturday, Apr. 2. The doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
