DENTON, Texas (Sept. 12) – Seventy seconds was all it took for 25
th-ranked Texas Woman's University to put a score on the board versus East Central, as the Pioneers rode out that lone goal in a 1-0 victory over the Tigers Monday night at TWU Soccer Field to open the season with a program-best 4-0 record.
The 4-0 mark is the finest opening record since the program's inception in 2002, with the next best record coming in 2014 where the Pioneers went 3-1 to begin the season.
TWU's prompt goal just over a minute into play came on a pass from
Nancy Chavez to
Chelsea Martin as Martin connected from the top of the box on a shot kicked over the keeper's head right down the middle of the posts. Reigning Lone Star Defensive Player of the Week,
Samantha Jimenez, notched her third shutout on the season while recording five saves versus the Tigers (0-3-1).
TWU (4-0-0) rattled off seven of its 12 shots within the first 15 minutes of play with Martin and
Gaby Larson sending shots wide,
Maddi Nolton being blocked and Chavez and
Pressley Bailey getting stopped by ECU's goalie. The Tigers fired off two shots with less than five minutes remaining in the first half only to be stopped by Jimenez.
The Pioneer shots went silent for 40 minutes until Chavez put a shot high and wide.
Rachel Peters and Larson attempted scores but were stopped by the keeper, and Martin sailed one high at the 58 minute mark. A close shot by ECU at the 77 minute mark was swiftly saved and one more stop by Jimenez at the 88 minute mark allowed the Pioneers to preserve the win.
The Pioneers are at home Friday to host Oklahoma Baptist at 7 p.m. at TWU Soccer Field.
