Three Pioneers post double-doubles versus No. 22 ASU

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Oct. 21, 2017) - Texas Woman's University hung tight with No. 22 Angelo State as Miri Shade, Makayla Mayfield and Katy Ranes each posted double-doubles, but the Pioneers fell in four sets (20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 24-26) Saturday afternoon inside Stephens Arena.

Shade tallied a team-high 12 kills and 15 digs while Mayfield registered 11 kills and 16 digs. Ranes handed out a match-high 40 assists and 16 digs, and Bailey French totaled a match-high 30 digs. Courtney Noel added 11 kills and a team-high seven blocks. The Pioneers (10-12, 7-6 LSC) had a season-high 102 digs, and the Belles (15-6, 7-5 LSC) recorded 112 digs, the highest single-match total in the LSC in 2017.

In set one, a Shade kill tied the game at 10-10 before ASU pulled ahead 17-12. The Pioneers pulled within 18-17 and kept it to two trailing 20-18 on a Noel kill, but ASU went on to win by five.

The Belles cruised to an 11-4 lead in set two, but the Pioneers pieced together an 11-2 run capped by a two aces by Ranes to pull ahead 15-13. ASU owned a 20-17 edge and was ahead 23-22 before a block by Noel and Ranes knotted the contest. Back-to-back Belle attack errors evened the match at one game apiece.

An ASU service error tied set three at 11-all, and three Belle points made it 14-11. Kerstin Jenkins had two kills, Noel and Ranes teamed up for a block, as did Jenkins and Noel, as part of a five-point TWU run for a 21-18 lead. The Belles then scored four straight to pull ahead 22-21 and ended the set on a pair of kills.

The Pioneers seemed to be in trouble during set four after falling behind 11-2 and then 19-9 before rallying. Shade put down to kills and French delivered a trio of aces to cut the deficit to 19-16. Another Shade kill had TWU within 20-18, but three points by ASU increased the margin to 23-18. A block by Ranes and Caroline Noel tied the set at 24-24, but two final kills from the Belles concluded the match.

The Pioneers head to Texas A&M-Commerce for a 6 p.m. match Tuesday.
