Pioneers drop 6-4 decision to Cameron

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 18, 2017) - Texas Woman's University rallied from a 5-1 fourth inning deficit to place the winning run on second base in the bottom of the seventh, but three Pioneers were left stranded in a 6-4 loss to Cameron Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

Cameron (12-4, 2-1 LSC) put two runs on the board in the second via a home run. TWU (9-7, 1-2 LSC) answered in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single from Alexis Elizondo.

A Pioneer error in the third allowed an Aggie runner to get on third base and while TWU caught a runner stealing, the Cameron runner snuck in to up the lead to 3-1.

An Aggie home run opened the fourth for a 4-1 advantage, and an RBI single tacked on another run. The Pioneers responded in the bottom half with hits from Tori Bice, Hazel Puempel and Abby Walker. Elizondo scored Walker with an RBI single to make it 5-2.

Tylia Sylestine and Bice each recorded an RBI single in the fifth to pull TWU to within 5-4. The Pioneers looked to tie the game in the sixth but left three runners stranded.

Facing two outs in the seventh, Cameron sent a single to right field followed by a shot up the middle to score another run before the Pioneers picked off a runner for the third out.

TWU faced the same two-out scenario before Puempel singled through the right side and advanced to second on a groundout. Elizondo drew a walk, and Melanie Stephens was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the Pioneers struck out swinging to conclude the game.

Walker (5-3) took the loss on five runs, six hits, one walk and a trio of strikeouts.

The Pioneers travel to No. 2 West Texas A&M for a single game Friday at 7 p.m. and a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
