Pioneers drop game one of series at No. 7 West Texas

CANYON, Texas (Feb. 24, 2017) - Two big offensive innings by No. 7 West Texas A&M handed Texas Woman's University a 20-1 loss Friday night at Shaeffer Park during game one of the three-game series.

The Lady Buffs doubled to left center in the bottom of the third to bring around the runner on first for a 1-0 advantage. A walk and single loaded the bases for WT, but Tori Bice struck out two batters to keep the runners at bay.

The Pioneers pinned two outs on WT in the bottom of the third, but a Lady Buff triple made it to the wall in right center to score three runs for a 4-0 WT lead. A single to left center followed by a passed ball allowed two more Lady Buff runs. A double to left field scored another before a wild pitch let one more in for an 8-0 lead.

Hazel Puempel singled through the left side in the top of the fourth, and a Tylia Sylestine sacrifice bunt pushed Puempel to second. A Bice single to first placed Puempel on third, and Alexis Elizondo brought her in on a sacrifice bunt. Nicole Parnell made to first by way of a WT throwing error and Bice went to third. Parnell stole second, and Abby Walker filled the bases with a walk, but a groundout ended the inning.

The Lady Buffs tallied 10 hits in the bottom of the fourth including a pair of home runs to increase their lead to 20-1.

Nordie knocked a single to left field at the start of the fifth, and Katie Stephens reached on a fielder's choice. Puempel sent a single center field, and a walk to Bice loaded the bases, but a final strikeout ended the contest.

The Pioneers continue play against WT Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
