Pioneers own ThunderWolves

DENTON, Texas (Sept. 10, 2017) - Texas Woman's University benefitted from a CSU-Pueblo own goal in the 68th minute to escape with a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon on TWU Soccer Field.

A chip from Maddi Nolton to a Pioneer teammate was hit off of a defender from the ThunderWolves to roll into the TWU goal midway through the second period and proved to be the game-winner.

ThunderWolves (1-2) outshot the Pioneers (2-1-1) in the game, 11 to 10, while TWU secured six shots on goal compared to five from CSUP. The Pioneers collected eight corner kicks compared to one by the ThunderWolves.

CSUP nearly posted the first score of the afternoon in the 27th minute when a shot hit the crossbar and rolled directly in front of the goal before reigning Lone Star Conference Defender of the Year, Maddie Vickroy, picked it up just short of a score.

The ThunderWolves fired off three shots within a three-minute span in the second half, two of which were saved by Vickroy, and the other bounced off the goal post by way of a header in the 57th minute.

Chelsea Martin launched a shot 15 minutes into the second period, but it was saved by CSUP's keeper. Following the own goal, the Pioneers attempted to add to their score, but shots by Haley Ward and Hannah Schneider went high. Lucero Chavez took a deep shot that nearly landed in the top corner of the goal that ultimately hit the opposite crossbar.

The ThunderWolves made one final attempt to score with 30 seconds remaining, but Vickroy was there to register her fifth save of the contest.

Head Coach Babak Abouzar stated "Sunday afternoon games are always a grind in college soccer. We had subs that came in and played valuable minutes today and that was the difference in the result. We always tell the players you never know when your name will be called. Today we called upon Lexi D'Abrosca, Lucero Chavez, and Emma Green. They helped raise the team's level up a notch."

The Pioneers host Southern Nazarene Thursday at 7 p.m. on TWU Soccer Field.
