Pioneers complete furious comeback in conference opener

DENTON, Texas (Nov. 29, 2018) — Texas Woman's began Lone Star Conference play on Thursday night at home against Western New Mexico, defeating the Mustangs 75-69.

Despite struggling from the field early, the Pioneers turned the tide, rallying from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to pick up the six-point victory.

"We knew going in they were a good fourth quarter team," head coach Beth Jillson said. "I'm really proud of our team, we scored 28 points in the fourth quarter and not just the same person."

Bri'Anna Gray, Carissa Moody and Alexus Dukes each scored double figures, with Moody leading the way with 19 points and 6 boards.

As part of an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter, Gray, who finished the game with 18 points and four rebounds, tied the game on a layup before sinking the go-ahead free throws the following possession.

"Our defense was also a lot better in the fourth quarter, Jillson added. "We were able to force some turnovers and get out and make easy layups."

Dukes logged 15 points and tied a team-high six rebounds to go along with two steals while Moody posted a game-high 19 points, including five three-pointers.

The Pioneers will return to action at home on Saturday when conference play resumes against UT-Permian Basin at 2 p.m.
