Pioneers defeat No. 22 St. Mary’s and Regis

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 9, 2018) - Texas Woman's University softball picked up a pair of wins Friday at the NCAA Division II College Classic with a 4-3 victory over the host team, No. 22 St. Mary's, and an 8-2 triumph over Regis.

Texas Woman's 4, No. 22 St. Mary's 3

Hazel Puempel totaled a pair of hits, while Cheyenne Mahy picked up the win in the circle and Abby Walker secured a save for the Pioneers (5-2).

Tylia Sylestine notched a single to left field in the opening inning with two outs, and Jordan Kisselburg sent one to shortstop to load the bases. Sarah LaChance was hit by a pitch to bring in Mahy for the first score of the game. St. Mary's (4-3) tied things up in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double and then took the lead at 2-1 due to a TWU fielding error.

Puempel singled to left field and stole second in the top of the third before Sylestine walked to first, and a sacrifice bunt by Kisselburg scored Puempel and bumped Sylestine up a base. Lindy Kennedy also produced a sacrifice bunt to score Sylestine for a 3-2 Pioneer advantage. The Rattlers quickly tied the game at 3-3 on a home run to left field.

Mahy began the fourth inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a Puempel single to left center. A walk to Sylestine filled the bases, but Mahy was called out at home as Kisselburg made it to first. A Rattler throwing error allowed Puempel to sneak in for the 4-3 Pioneer lead. A single by Kennedy to left field moved Sylestine, but she was also caught at home for the third out.

St. Mary's was only able to muster two more hits throughout the contest as the Pioneers held on for the win.

The win by Mahy (2-1) included two earned runs on seven hits and three strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Walker's first save of the season was accomplished in 3.2 innings with one hit, one strikeout, and one walk.

Morgan McCallum and Kisselburg each tallied two hits for TWU, as did Sylestine who also picked up the first Pioneer home run of the season.

The Rangers (1-6) put up the first score in the top of the second on an RBI single to left center. The Pioneers took advantage of a Regis error in the bottom of the third to notch a pair of unearned runs on a double from Sylestine for a 2-1 edge.

In the top of the fourth, the Rangers were able to benefit off of a Pioneer miscue to knot the game at 2-2. Kisselburg doubled to right center and advanced to third on a Livia Zamora single up the middle before McCallum sent a double down the right field line to bring in Kisselburg and Williams for a 4-2 TWU lead.

With Williams on third and Kenzie Wilson stealing second in the bottom of the sixth, an RBI from McCallum scored Williams, and a bunt by Mahy brought in Wilson to put the Pioneers ahead, 6-2. Sylestine then blasted a shot over center field for another pair of runs for the 8-2 TWU lead.

Walker (2-1) secured the win with two hits, five strikeouts, and a walk.

The Pioneers continue play in the NCAA Division II College Classic Saturday with a 10 a.m. game against Tarleton State and a 2:30 p.m. contest versus St. Edward's.
