Puempel powers Pioneers past St. Mary’s in game one victory

DENTON, Texas (March 14, 2018) - Hazel Puempel of Texas Woman's University smoked a two-run homer and Cheyenne Mahy pitched a shutout in game one versus regional opponent St. Mary's in a 2-0 win before the Pioneers fell, 8-0, in game two of the doubleheader versus the Rattlers Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

The Rattlers (21-8, 9-0 Heartland) nearly were the first to strike during in the opening inning as a fielder's choice and double down the left field line placed runners on second and third, but Mahy kept the hitters at bay by striking out a Rattler swinging and a pop out.
 
Tylia Sylestine doubled to center field, and Puempel smashed the scoreboard in right center field for the two-run lead in the first. In the third, Erin Mosely took a walk and made it to second on a sacrifice fly from MaKayla Cook. A wild pitch advanced Mosely to third, but a TWU strikeout ended the opportunity.
 
St. Mary's delivered four more hits throughout the contest, but the Pioneers (15-10, 5-4 LSC) held on the for the in-region victory.
 
Mahy (8-2) tallied her second shutout of the season on five hits, three strikeouts and a walk.

The Rattlers came out strong in the first two innings to rack up three runs in the first, including a two-run home run, and another pair in the second for a 5-0 lead.
 
Puempel tallied the second Pioneer hit of the game in the fourth with a single to shortstop, but three quick outs ended the inning. In the fifth, Melanie Stephens was hit by a pitch, and Cook took a walk. Another walk to Kenzie Wilson filled the bases, but Stephens and Cook were each caught out at home.
 
St. Mary's pieced together four straight hits, including another home run, to add three runs to their total in the top of the seventh. Three consecutive outs by the Pioneers finished off the contest.
 
Walker (6-7) suffered the loss with five runs on six hits, three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
 
Head Coach Genny Stidham said, "I saw a team that was tough that first game. I hope to see that team more often."
 
The Pioneers head to Eastern New Mexico to jump back into LSC play with a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m. CST and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m.
