Softball earns first LSC sweep of season

PORTALES, N.M. (March 17, 2018) - Texas Woman's University held off a six-run seventh inning comeback from Eastern New Mexico in a 9-7 victory for a TWU Lone Star Conference series sweep, their first of the season, over the Greyhounds Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Softball Field.

Singles by Tylia Sylestine, Jordan Kisselburg, and Hazel Puempel loaded the bases in the first as Abby Walker singled through the right side to bring in the first two runs. A sacrifice bunt by Cheyenne Mahy scored Puempel for a 3-0 TWU (18-10, 8-4 LSC) advantage.

Kenzie Wilson singled to left field in the top of the fourth and made her way to third on a hit by Tara Solomon, and Lindy Kennedy singled to shortstop as Solomon was called out for interference. Kennedy and Wilson then both stole bases with Wilson adding a run.

In the top of the sixth, Wilson reached third by way of a dropped fly ball and a wild pitch before a hit by Solomon brought her home. Puempel took a walk with the bases filled to put the Pioneers up, 6-0. The Greyhounds (13-15, 6-8 LSC) earned a run in the bottom half of the inning to pull within five runs.

Mahy homered in the seventh to add a run, and an RBI each by Solomon and Kennedy upped the lead to 9-1. The Greyhounds opened the second half of the inning with four straight hits, including a two-run homer, to make it a 9-3 game. A double to left center brought in another run, and a three-run bomb had ENMU trailing by two scores before a line up ended the Greyhound rally.

Mahy (9-2) took the win on two runs with five hits, two strikeouts and a walk.

Head Coach Genny Stidham said, "It wasn't always pretty, but I'll take winning three games on the road."

The Pioneers host St. Edward's for a doubleheader Wednesday at 4 p.m.
